The EWT Type 48 membrane electrolysis system continuously produces highly effective hypochlorous acid from natural salt—with twice the output of the Type 24 model for larger pools. The physical separation of the brine from the pool water circuit via a high-tech membrane completely prevents the pool water from becoming oversalted.
The closed system uses a maintenance-free injector mechanism to feed the liquid active chlorine directly into your piping via a bypass loop. Mechanical dosing pumps are completely eliminated. The diaphragm cell is protected underwater in the brine tank, so there is no risk of chlorine leakage.

Automatic brine formation
In the 90-liter storage tank, a saturated salt solution (brine) is produced from ordinary, high-purity evaporated salt and bypass water. This process runs completely autonomously and under controlled conditions—under continuous load, up to 6 kg of salt is processed per day.

Electrochemical Splitting
The brine is fed into the membrane cell. Under precise direct current supply and strict spatial separation provided by the membrane, highly pure, germicidal hypochlorous acid is produced—up to 48 g of active chlorine per hour.

How often does the salt need to be refilled in a Type 48 membrane electrolysis system?
The Type 48 consumes up to 6 kg of salt per day during continuous operation. The salt is automatically dispensed from a 90-liter storage tank, so in practice, it only needs to be refilled at longer intervals rather than daily.
What distinguishes membrane electrolysis from traditional salt electrolysis?
In conventional salt electrolysis, the entire pool water is salted and directly electrolyzed, which leads to a noticeable increase in salinity. With EWT membrane electrolysis, the brine is completely separated from the pool water circuit by a membrane. Only the finished active chlorine enters the pool.
Does the water smell like chlorine during membrane electrolysis?
Precise dosing prevents the formation of combined chlorine (chloramines), which is responsible for the typical pungent swimming pool odor. As a result, the indoor air quality in indoor swimming pools remains significantly more pleasant than with traditional chlorination.
What pool size is the Type 48 suitable for?
The Type 48, with a rated output of 48 g of active chlorine per hour, is designed for larger private outdoor pools, indoor pools, therapy pools, and hot tubs—the logical evolution of the Type 24 for larger pool volumes. For professional applications, EWT offers the Type 100; for public pools, the Type 250 and 500.
Can the system be retrofitted into an existing pool system?
Yes, the system is suitable for both new installations and retrofitting existing filter systems, and can be integrated into existing piping via the bypass using the injector principle.
Does the Type 48 require a fresh water connection?
No. As with the Type 24, the system is connected directly to the pool water and does not require a separate fresh water connection. A portion of the pool water is used to absorb the resulting disinfectant.
